Interview Dos and Don’ts

Interview Dos and Don’ts

DO'S
  • Dont stress out too much
  • Arrive 10 minutes before the interview. Not more or less. It is never okay to be late. It can be of concern when you arrive much too early as being invasive to those who may not be ready to hear from you.
  • Check yourself before the interview (teeth, hair, clothes).
  • Shake hands with everyone you meet in the interview.
  • Get up from the chair to shake hands and greet new people who enter the room to join the interview.
  • Answer each question honestly, professionally, and directly.
  • Be sure to answer the questions the interviewer really asks and not the questions that you prefer answering.
  • Never use negative language when describing past work history.

DONT'S
  • Interrupt the interviewer.
  • When faced with unclear question feel free to ask the interviewer to clarify rather than answering it halfheartedly
  • Smoke, chew gum, or lay anything on the interviewer's desk.
  • Be too familiar.
  • Ramble on.
  • Taking too long to answer questions may sound apologetic, indecisive, or to indicate confused thinking.
